Elsabeth, Muriel + the Toaster by linzi Elsabeth, Muriel + the Toaster by linzi
"Elsabeth, Muriel and the Toaster"

Elsabeth inexplicably puts up with this most ludicrously useless and clumsy robot, 'The Toaster', tagging around her whenever he has the opportunity. She can be harsh with him but in actuality she has a real soft spot for this 'fool of a robot' that she'd never openly admit to. Muriel (the cat) keeps her thoughts and feelings to herself for the most part.

Did I mention that Toaster is mute?

Victoriana/Cyber punk kinda world and that is her school uniform.

*Full View Please!*

----

A really long time in photoshop 5.5, custom brushes made by me and blah blah blah blah. This sat on my hard drive for over two years and I only started working on it again a few weeks ago.

Oh, and sorry for it appearing on yur watch again. I've added some more detail to the background. Updated the print files as well.

Interesting way to explain the muteness of a toaster. You are an artist!

You should expand this idea into a book.
or a poster...see wondermark for an example.

I saw this long time ago on Elfwood, it stayed in my mind. Here it is again. I really like it. Whatever the story actually is, it looks a lot like a children's book illustration...

This is absolutely wonderful, it does remind me of a childrens story. (I think the Victoriana helps with that.) But its something that every adult can smile at. I love it. :aww:

the toaster is such an adorable character! that lopsided smile...aww. you pulled off the metallic texture very well; its like that stainless steel thing; not the super shiny stuff. the conrete is amazingly done too. you put amazing detail into this piece (no dumping). i <3

Wow, I seriously thought this was an acrylic/ oil painting when I clicked on it. You've got a really nice digital style. I can't think of any critique to give it- I think you have done an excellent job and I'm a real sucker for this sort of theme. :D

Okay, with 50+ comments this is going to be a little lost here, but I'll add my tuppenceworth anyway, as everyone likes to get comments, don't they? I love the light, and the 'sheen' of the metal on Toaster. Elsabeth's face, and the hair framing it, is great. Particularly like the story behind it...I like things to have stories to them, it gives them interest (not that this wouldn't be good without the story, but the story just makes it more so!)

:) Thankyou for your kind words. And no, I never pass over a comment. Such valuable encouragement and critiques that I recieve here I will always cherish. This is the most popular picture I've made to date but I think half the comments counted are me replying!
And yes, I feel the characters deserved a story and therefore so does the viewer :)

What to say? That's an adorable robot...and I'm impressed with the minor detail of the oil in the little pool of water. Very clever.

Do you know, I really have been considering writing a story for them (there is plenty background in my head to support it). Be frightened my language skills wouldn't do my imagination justice.

Thankyou, such a lovely comment. Be holding onto this one.

what an endearing image--the title, artpiece, and description all as a whole! maybe change the girl's face so that it shows that inside she really does care--she seems more expressionless than what's in your description :)

I couldn't possibly soften Elsabeth in this pic, she relies on her hard front and she doesn't know the Toaster that well yet. :) I'll maybe show her soft side in another illustration but for this one I wanted her to look Dickensian almost, as a contrast to the robot (for the comedy value as much as anything). She is supposed to look kind of wistfully jaded just now. If she wasn't making eye contact with him she'd probably have to smile. There's something of a staring match going on here.

Fantastic textures! Especially with the robot and the stones. I like all the colours you've meshed together to form something quite beautiful. In particular, I'm fond of the pastel sky and the little girl. Let's not forget the kitty, too!

The robot's expression is priceless, hehe. It's as cute as the cat, or even more so. :)

Thanks. :) Part of Toaster's expression is actually fixed as it's as a result of damage, his mouth is but a scratch in the metal case of his head. Poor mute toaster, it's lucky that the damage reflects his personality.
